For sustainable development, much needs to be done to ensure that everyone has access to clean water, sanitation, reliable energy and other basic human needs. There is also much to be done in all countries - to address the impacts of climate change, environmental problems, our growing cities and the challenges of new technologies including artificial intelligence. There are many opportunities and the day can be used to connect with young people and say, "If you want to change the world for the better, become an engineer."

The Sustainable Development Goals are a call for all countries - rich, poor and middle-income - to promote prosperity while protecting the planet. They recognize that ending poverty must be accompanied by strategies that promote economic growth and address a range of social needs, such as education, health, social protection and employment opportunities, while addressing climate change and environmental protection.
